Do History Checks Work and Are They Worth It?

When reading about checking over a used car, you will notice that practically every resource will tell you to get a history check carried out. This is because it can be very easy to conceal secrets about a vehicle’s past, plus the used car market is one that is rife with scams. You may come across companies that offer a free history check, but it is important to be aware that this will not provide you with all of the information that you need. Instead, you must get the check carried out by HPI – they will use data from bodies including insurance companies, the police, finance companies amongst other places for a comprehensive overview of the automobile’s past.

Number Plate Change – A number plate change may be innocent, but it could also be to cover up previous issues attached to the car. An HPI check will see how many changes have been made and if there is anything outstanding on the previous plate.

Recorded as Stolen – Did you know that over 370,000 cars are stolen each year in the UK? This is the highest (per capita) in all of Europe, with many of these automobiles then being sold on. These history checks go to the Police National Computer and ensure that the car you are looking at is not recorded as stolen.

Previous Write-Off – Most motorists would not drive a car if they knew that it was previously written-off, but many people are salvaging these cars and then selling them without disclosing this information. These cars, known as CAT C, are incredibly unsafe to drive. A check will see if it has ever been declared a total loss.

Outstanding Finance – Outstanding finance stays with the car, so if you purchase a used vehicle with an outstanding finance agreement of loan, then you will soon have the lender knocking at your door. These checks will check determine if the automobile has any outstanding finance on it. 1 in 4 of the cars they check are found to have some kind of debt attached.
